Not familiar with this cycle of freezing and thawing? Here’s an overview:

Your brickwork absorbs the water it’s exposed to. (It’s more like a sponge than most people realize.)

When temperatures drop in the winter, the water freezes, expands, and pushes against the brickwork, causing it to crack.

Temperatures rise, ice everywhere melts, and water fills in the newly formed cracks.

Temperatures drop again, causing the water to freeze, expand, and trigger further cracking.

Temperatures rise and… you get the idea. It’s a vicious cycle.

The freeze/thaw process occurs over and over again throughout the winter months, so by the end of your burn season you could be facing quite a bit of new damage. Waterproofing is imperative for keeping water out of your bricks, so all of that deterioration and cracking can be avoided.

Are Your Chimney Shoulders Sloping?

Damaged and deteriorated exterior chimney shoulders will welcome water into the interior of the system, which then creates unsightly damage and can trigger a whole mess of other issues. One clue that your shoulders are damaged is streaks of water in the firebox. Water can also cling to your interior wood studs and cause damage there.

If this is an issue for you, we recommend having the mortar sloped on the corbels of the shoulder to aid with the shedding of water. Need more info? We’re happy to help!
