Rely On Our Experts to Restore Your Deteriorated Chimney Crown
An issue that often goes unnoticed by homeowners is chimney crown-related damage. Unless you’re climbing to the very top of the chimney, seeing the full extent of your crown’s condition can be a challenge. Which means cracking, gaps, and other damage can form – and then worsen – for quite some time before being detected.
Why Are Well-Built Chimney Crowns Important?
- Crowns are designed to direct water away from the sides of the masonry chimney. If built to incorrect measurements or from the wrong materials, this won’t be possible.
- A crown that’s not protected or built right will allow water to work its way into the chimney where the flue tiles and masonry will then be affected.
- Poorly designed crowns can allow water to pool, which will then cause your system to suffer deterioration and decay.
- Once water has penetrated your masonry, tuckpointing services and other repairs will be warranted. A proper crown helps to avoid this.
What Are the Qualities of a Properly Built Crown?
A crown that’s been professionally built by a team of Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified sweeps should meet the following characteristics:
- It should be built from a cement-based mixture – not a basic mortar mix.
- It should extend past the edge of the chimney by at least two inches.
- It should be thick enough to withstand decay and deterioration.
- The flue liner tile should extend above the crown a minimum of two inches.
- It should be professionally waterproofed.
