Why Are Chimney Inspections Necessary?
All chimneys, no matter the fuel being used, are exposed to some combination of heat, smoke, and/or toxic fumes. And if your system isn’t functioning properly, these can break things down, which will lead to hazardous damages and buildup – and the health and safety of your household will be at risk.
By investing in a professional inspection on an annual basis, you can rest assured any issues will be caught and addressed well before lighting your first fire of the year. At West Tennessee Chimneys, our sweeps understand that a comprehensive, informative, and accurate report is essential for keeping you and your loved ones safer.
The Three Levels Of Chimney Inspections
There are three levels of chimney inspections, all of which are based on the standards of the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA). Which level you require depends on the current condition of your system, when your last inspection was, and whether you’ve experienced any hazardous weather or updates/upgrades to your system.
1
Level 1 Inspection
This is the most basic of the three inspections – but that doesn’t make it any less important. In fact, level one inspections play a vital role in revealing symptoms of larger and more hazardous issues. When we perform a level 1 inspection, we’ll examine all readily accessible areas of the chimney and check for any hazards, such as creosote buildup, structural damage, clearance to combustibles, and correct liner connections.
2
Level 2 Inspection
Level 2 inspections are required for many reasons. Some of these include: when home ownership changes hands, after a disastrous event (like a chimney fire, lightning strike, earthquake, etc.), after a tree or even a car – trust us on this one – hits the chimney, or if any major changes (like relining or switching fuels) are made to the system.
All things in a level 1 inspection will be covered, along with the examination of areas that can be accessed without damaging the home. What truly sets level 2 inspections apart, though, is the use of camera equipment to get a clear, precise, and thorough overview of the entire chimney interior.
We’ll also examine the attic, basement (as needed), and any crawl spaces. The NFPA and the CSIA recommend that any new chimney being serviced should have a level two inspection completed.
3
Level 3 Inspection
A level 3 inspection will be completed if the sweeps need to access areas that can’t be uncovered during a level 1 or level 2 inspection. This inspection tends to be more exploratory in nature, typically requiring the use of special tools, and sometimes parts of the home or fireplace will need to be demoed or removed.
West Tennessee Chimneys will only suggest this level of inspection when there are strong indicators or evidence that hidden hazards are present.
