Has Your Chimney in Union City Experienced a Chimney Fire? West Tennessee Chimneys Is Here to Help

Dealing with the aftermath of a chimney fire? Not sure of your next steps? We’re here to help homeowners in Union City, Pleasant Valley, Highland, Gibbs, McCutchen Heights, Shofner, Rives, Sunnyside, Woodland Mills, Jordan, Midway, Brownsville, Dyersburg, and more.

Chimney fires are dangerous events. If you know your chimney is currently experiencing one, leave your home immediately and reach out to the proper authorities.

That said, more often than not, a homeowner will not know a chimney fire has occurred until long after the fact. If you’ve spotted signs that a chimney fire has occurred (like puffy/honeycombed creosote, warped metal components, damaged flue tiles, or residue on your roof), you may not know what to do next. Fortunately, we’ve got your back.

What To Do After a Chimney Fire

1

1. Stop Using the Fireplace

A chimney that’s experienced a chimney fire is not going to be safe for use. There is likely extensive damage that has occurred, meaning your risk of experiencing carbon monoxide exposure, smoke in your home, house fires, and other hazards will have gone up exponentially.

It’s imperative that you quit using your system until after any necessary repairs or rebuilds have been completed, and you’ve been given the go-ahead from a Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified sweep.

2. Call Your Insurance Company

Most insurance companies will cover repairs and restoration work after a chimney fire. This is considered a sudden or accidental occurrence, which means it wasn’t something you could have prevented.

Note: They’re also likely to cover any damage that has occurred after a natural event or disaster – think floods, tornadoes, lightning strikes, etc. – so be sure to call if you ever experience something like this too.

That said, they’ll need proof. Ask them what they need from you to get the process rolling, and make sure you cover all of your bases before moving forward with any repairs.

3. Call a CSIA-Certified Sweep

Once you know what your insurance company requires, call in a CSIA-certified chimney sweep to perform an in-depth inspection, so that you have everything you need for your claim. The sweep can also assess which repairs will be needed, so that you can eventually put your chimney and fireplace back to use.

One thing that’s important to remember throughout this entire process: Document everything! When it comes to getting the coverage you deserve, documentation is key. Record the date the chimney fire occurred, the company (and team members) that evaluated the chimney, the date your evaluation was completed, and any other relevant information you think your insurance company may need.
