If your sweep spots buildup or creosote in your flue during your annual inspection, then it’s time to get a chimney cleaning booked. Creosote is highly flammable, can be quite damaging to your structure, and the more you have of it, the higher your chances are of experiencing a chimney fire. Relying on a team you trust to remove it is a must.

What Are the Stages of Creosote?

There are three stages of creosote:

1

First Stage Creosote: First stage creosote is the easiest to remove. It tends to be flakier or more powder-like, and a professional sweep should be able to clear it out with standard tools, no problem.

2

Second Stage Creosote: Second stage creosote is more tar-like in nature. This is harder to remove and may require the use of more specialty tools and products.

3

Third Stage Creosote: This final stage of creosote is hard and shiny, looking like tar that has solidified. A professional sweep will know the best way to address this level of buildup, and if it cannot be removed, a new liner may be in order.

To avoid buildup, burn only seasoned firewood in your flue, make sure you have good airflow when lighting fires, and burn hot, fast-moving fires (rather than slow-burning ones that allow smoke to crawl up the flue and linger). And be sure to invest in cleanings whenever they’re recommended – don’t put them off!
